Website Design & Branding

Home >> Website Design & Branding

Intro

I offer website design and branding support for small and medium-sized businesses that need a clearer, better organised online presence. My work is centred on WordPress websites, but the service is broader than the build alone. It can include copywriting, on-page SEO, image preparation, visual direction, and the practical digital setup that helps a business present itself properly online.

Many businesses do not simply need a new website. They need clearer messaging, stronger structure, more visual consistency, and a better connection between the website and the wider digital presence around it. My role is to bring those parts together in a way that is practical, well considered, and suited to the real needs of the business.

What I Offer

Website Setup and Build

I design and build WordPress websites shaped around the operational needs of the business. That may mean starting from scratch, improving an existing site, helping choose and register an appropriate domain name, setting up hosting, or structuring the site so that it works more clearly for both visitors and the business itself.

Copy, Content, and SEO

I can write or refine website copy so that it is clear, engaging, structurally sound, and appropriate to the business. That includes headings, page structure, and content that reads well while also supporting search visibility. I also prepare images carefully so that they are named, placed, and presented in a way that supports the purpose of the page.

Branding and Visual Direction

Some clients already have a defined identity and need a better website built around it. Others need help shaping the wider visual direction of the business. Where needed, I can help with typography, colour palette, page style, and simple visual identity support. If a more developed logo or brand mark is required, I can also work with a trusted designer.

Google, Social, and Email Setup

A good website should not sit in isolation. I can also help set up or align Google Business Profile, Maps, Facebook, Instagram, X, and other relevant social accounts so that they reflect the website clearly and consistently. Where relevant, I can also help establish a Mailchimp mailing list and create branded email templates that match the wider visual identity of the business.

What a Good Website Should Do

A good business website should do more than look presentable. It should explain the business clearly, make navigation straightforward, work properly across devices, and make it easy for people to take the next step, whether that means making an enquiry, finding a location, understanding a service, or getting in touch.

It should also reflect the business accurately in tone, structure, and design. That means the words, images, typography, page layout, and connected platforms should all feel as though they belong to the same organisation. A website works best when it is clear in itself and properly connected to the wider online presence around it.

How I Work

I look at the wider picture rather than treating the website as a standalone object. That includes what the business needs to communicate, how people are likely to use the site, what content needs to be created or improved, and what connected setup may be needed around it.

My role is to make that process feel structured and manageable. Many clients do not need more technical noise. They need clear guidance, sensible decisions, and someone who can bring the different parts of the project together without the work becoming fragmented.

WordPress, Content, and Structure

I specialise in building websites in WordPress CMS. It is a flexible and practical platform for small and medium-sized businesses, and it allows sites to be structured around the real needs of the client rather than forced into a rigid template.

I pay close attention to the relationship between structure, copy, images, and usability so that the final site works as a whole. A site can look polished and still fail if the writing is weak, the structure is confusing, or the pages do not guide people clearly. Design and content need to support each other, not compete.

Who This Is For

This service is best suited to small and medium-sized businesses, independent organisations, consultants, studios, shops, and service-based businesses that want a more professional and better organised online presence.

It is particularly useful for clients who want one person to understand the wider picture and bring together website structure, writing, design, and practical digital setup in one place.

Background

I have worked on website design on a daily basis since 2010, and my experience in digital design goes back further still. Before moving to Japan, I built websites for martial arts tournament organisers in the UK. After moving to Japan, I joined an international events company and ultimately became its Director of Visual Communications.

That role required practical experience across website design, writing, visual communication, and project delivery. It took me across Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East, where I photographed more than 70 multi-day events and created websites and printed materials for more than 150 conferences.

During that period, my work involved projects connected with organisations and partners including the Government of Japan, The Wall Street Journal, the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, University College London, Virginia Tech, Osaka University, and the University of Barcelona, among others. That breadth of experience still shapes how I work now.
